Refuting the “rapture for nerds” point

    By Dave Gottlieb | June 3, 2008

Warren Ellis (a hack) makes the hackneyed point that the idea of Singularity should be ignored as “religious” because of a seeming resemblance to millenarian religious cults. George Dvorsky does a good job of exposing the vacuum at the heart of this argument. You don’t have to be a Singularitarian to appreciate (most of) it. Um, in fact, I guess it’s mostly obvious. Hur hur.

UPDATE: in spite of my criticism, I admire this formulation (partly) from Ellis: “The Flying Spaghetti Monster represents the end of the supremacy of Homo sapiens as the dominant species on planet Earth.”
