Tragedy of the common room

Do people with single rooms have neater rooms than people with doubles and triples? Microeconomic theory suggests that coordination failures in cleaning up will make people with roommates messier. I’d like to study this at some point, but messiness is hard to measure. It seems like the only reliable way to do it would be to recruit people to rate rooms for messiness, something I don’t have time for right now.
