Has the experiment been done to distinguish the phenomenon known as “depressive realism” (depressed people lack certain happy delusions that regular people have) from a tendency towards negativity, real or otherwise? The classic experiment has depressed people accurately blaming themselves for their failures at some game, whereas regular people often blame the game, delusionally believing it’s out of their control. My question is, are the depressed subjects really seeing things more accurately, or is the normal delusion just overcome by a negative bias that isn’t necessarily accurate but just happens to line up with reality in this case? The wikipedia article is suggestive but not conclusive.
